NPDR is distinguished from proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), which is the more advanced form of the disease. In PDR, the retina becomes so oxygen-deprived that abnormal new blood vessels grow on its surface and into the vitreous, the gel-filled space inside the eye.
